A UTM Machine, also known as a universal tester, materials testing machine, materials test frame or tensile strength tester is used to test the tensile stress and compressive strength of materials. A UTM Machine, also known as tension test, is probably the most elementary type of mechanical test you can perform on material. Tension tests are simple, relatively economical, and fully standardized.
Tensile test is a measurement of ability of material will react to forces being applied in tension that tends to pull it apart and to determine to its strength to what extent the materials stretches before breaking. The strength of a material often is the prime concern. The strength refers to the ability of a structure to resist loads without failure because of excessive stress or deformation to cause appreciable plastic, textile, rubber etc. deformation or the maximum stress that the material can withstand. All samples should be made to the sizes specified in the standard and be free from observable surface flaws, including molding flash, shorts, or surface scratches. The UTM Machine (Universal Tensile Testing Machine) may or may not equate to the strength at break. The mechanical properties of testing material can change dramatically when certain additives are included into the formulation. This all depends on what type of material you are testing; some of these properties incorporate strength, brittle, and toughness, ductile i.e. which is a measure of how much it can be collapsed before it fracture, or a material that may still exhibits both properties.

The UTM Machine (Universal Tensile Tester) gives highly accurate force measuring system for testing a variety of materials, components, and structures. Load cells, grips, fixtures can be interchanged easily to perform different tests like Flexural, Compression, Elongation, Co-efficient of Friction, Peeling and bonding strength. Measurement is prepared by using a tensile tester applying a constant rate of elongation to the test strip. The control panel is an integral constituent of the testing system, decreasing set up time and increasing testing efficiency through the use of display which record the load and extension or compression of the sample. Tests can be set up and run directly from the control panel. As the machines have to go under number of testing methods, so there is need that machine have to be calibrated on the routine basis, which ensures reliability & durability; it is advised that well-known manufacturer must be looked for universal testing machines.
