In accordance with the Direct System, the count is the weight per Unit Length of yarn. For example “Tex” is number of grams in one Kilometer Length of yarn; “Denier” is number of grams in 9000 meters of yarn (where one denier equals 1/9th of a tex).

In the Indirect System, the count is the number of unit of fixed length of yarn which make a fixed weight: For instance “Cotton” is number of hanks of yarn in a pound, “Metric” is number of Kilometers of yarn in one Kilogram.
