The Presto muffle furnace is used to determine the ash content of a specimen. The percentage of ash in a material gives important insights into the properties of the substance. The Presto muffle furnace is specially designed as per IS & ASTM Standards. It finds wide application in various fields such as Medical research, agricultural, industrial, metal treatment, rubber & wool industries.

  • The percentage of ash is calculated as the index of added mineral matter or loading. A known weight of the specimen is burnt, the ash is weighed and the percentage is calculated.

    The procedure involves tearing about lg of the specimen into small shreds and placing it in a previously weighed crucible. The weight is checked again. Then, the crucible is heated carefully over a Bunsen burner to ensure that the paper, burns until it is completely charred. The next step is to transfer the crucible into a Presto Muffle furnace at 800+25. C (or as specified) and heat it until all the carbonaceous matter is burnt off. Then, the

    Crucible is cooled in desiccators and weighed. The operation is repeated till the weight is constant.

    Calculation of ash content:

    Ash, % by weight = 100 a-x/b-x


    A= Weight in g of the crucible and the ash (w3)

    B= weight in g of the crucible and the material (W1)

    X= weight in g of the crucible (W2)

    Make three determinations and report maximum, Minimum and average.

    The Presto Muffle furnace is finished in Autumn Gray & Blue combination painting to give it a corrosion resistant finish.

    The Instrument comes complete with Instruction Manual; Electrical Wiring Diagram & Calibration Certificate traceable to NABL approved Labs.
