Properties of Elastomers and Standard Methods

Elastomers are very versatile materials for engineering applications. These materials behave completely different from other products like metals, plastics; mainly in the way they deform and recover under a specific load. Rubbers or Elastomers are composite materials that reveal the different combination of properties; the most important out of these are resilience and elasticity. All elastomers have the capability to deform considerably by compression, stretching, torsion and then came back to the original position and shape after removing the force that was causing the bend, flex, or any type of deformation in the material. The property of resilience in elastomers helps them to get back to their original shape.

Properties of Elastomers

Elastomers are made up of polymers that have chief properties of elasticity. These elastomers consist of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen that make a long chain of atoms, which have a high grade of cross-linking potency with the connected chains. These atoms have a strong linking bond that initiates the resilience property in elastomers to pull the elastomers back into the original shape after the removal of deforming force. The most beneficial properties of rubbers are that, it is used in various applications to fulfill the diversified need of customers.

With the vast demand for quality elastomers in industrial as well as domestic applications, manufacturers are using quality material for manufacturing rubber goods. To gauge the quality and elastic properties of rubber goods before the commencement of the production process, rubber testing instruments are used. Some of the well-known instruments that help to measure the flexibility of rubbers include Ross Flexing Tester, Bennewart Flex Tester, Din Abrasion tester, IRHD hardness tester, tensile Tester and many more. Using standard test methods is very important for avoiding any rejections or defects during the production process.

Standard Methods for Testing Rubber Goods

It is important to keep in mind that when testing equipments and procedures for testing materials, they must comply with all the international safety as well quality standards. This is only possible when reputed suppliers of high quality testing instruments are chosen for the industry. Above mentioned testers strictly comply with domestic and international test standards. As per ASTM’s standard method, rubber standard test methods explain the procedures to measure the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of a wide range of products made up of rubbers and elastomers. These standards help manufacturers to evaluate and examine the product to ensure the quality towards safe utilization.
