Different Types of Testing in Metal Industry
Metal Industry is one such industry that utilises different types of machines to assess the properties. The testing procedures can be according to the industrial requirement or for the internal standards fulfilment. Also, to test the quality of the in-house materials, raw materials or procured materials, testing can be performed. Implementation of the right testing process can help in controlling the failure to a good extent.
Cupping Testing
This might sound weird, but this test is as important as any other test process. This test determines the drawability of the metal sheets. Apart from that, cupping testing machine can be used to check the adhesion and drawability of the coating on the surface. The metal sheets are prone to dents due to external forces, in such cases, the sheet or coating either tend to elongate or crack. At what force or at what deflection, failure occurs can be identified with this machine.

Tensile Testing
This test is performed to check the mechanical and physical properties of the metal specimen. This helps in analysing ductility, brittleness, stiffness and strength of the metal in stressed conditions. Tensile properties can be defined as the resistance of the specimen against the breakage when an outward pull is exerted on it. Such a stress may lead to deformity like necking or breakage of the sample. Depending upon the mechanical properties, the sample may either elongate or fracture. This is how stiffness and ductility can be assessed.
Salt Spray Testing
This test is performed to analyse the corrosion resistance of the metal specimen. In this test, the sample is exposed to a saline fog and kept in the chamber for a predefined time. Once the test cycle is over, the specimen is analysed visually for any failure. Also, it is very important to know that if there is any regression in the production process. The saline fog is the composition of 5% of NaCl solution with 95% of water content. It is always advised by the manufacturer of the salt spray chamber that once the test process starts; the chamber should not be opened. This might result in disturbance of simulated environment and test results are not accurate. The saline fog is highly corrosive and thus it should not be dissipated in the surroundings. Instead, purging is done before opening the chamber.
