Obtain High-grade of Thermoplastic Fluoropolymer with MFI Test

Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) is a highly non-reactive thermoplastic fluoropolymer created by the polymerization of vinylidene difluoride. PVDF is a special plastic material which is utilized in applications requiring the highest purity, as well as resistance to solvents, acids and bases. Due to their applications ranging from lower to high level of products, it is vital that they must be tested for their quality standards and the primary category falling under quality standards is the melt flow index test or MFI test using an accurate and advanced melt flow index tester.

Distinct Applications of Fluoropolymer
It is used to produce piping products, sheet, tubing, films, plate and an insulator for the premium wire. It can also be injected, moulded or welded and is commonly utilized in the chemical, semiconductor, medical and defence industries, as well as in lithium-ion batteries. It is also available as a cross-linked closed-cell foam, used increasingly in aviation and aerospace applications. It can also be used in repeated contact with food products, as it is FDA compliant and absolutely non-toxic.

Important Features of Thermoplastic Fluoropolymers

  • melt process ability by standard methods
  • a wide range of operating temperatures
  • high thermal and heat stability, non-in flammability
  • excellent chemical stability
  • reliability at high mechanical loads
  • good electrical antifriction and anti-adhesion properties
  • excellent weather stability and ageing stability
  • higher radiation stability compared to that of PTFE
  • minimum scraps while manufacturing products
  • non-toxicity, biological stability

Need of MFI testing
Vinylidene fluoride polymer resins presently in the market are being extruded at modest speeds, up to 550 feet per minute. The natural desire of wire and cable manufacturers, and other users of such materials, is to process such resins at higher speeds in order to achieve optimum productivity. Need for vinylidene fluoride polymer resin having improved properties is also of importance in the chemical processing equipment field. This includes piping systems, both lined and solid, and a variety of solid lined valves and pumps.

It is a primary object of the polymer to have improved melt flow characteristics. And to obtain high-grade polymer material, a precise MFI test can be conducted on a variety of samples. It is also known to be a comparison testing.
For an efficient testing procedure, one must use a standardized tool such as Presto’s Melt flow index tester.

It is an efficient plastic testing instrument used for evaluating the flow properties of molten plastics or resins. The test is carried out under the prescribed condition of temperature, load and piston position in a cylindrical cavity inside a heated metallic tube barrel. It is designed as per the international standards of ASTM D 1238-1992, ISO 1133, IS 2267-1972, IS 2530-1963, IS 10810-1984.
