Set the Right Amount of Friction in Packaging films

Flexible Plastic Pouches are often seen stacked over each other on retailer’s shop, or in the truck or in the supermarket. Does the manufacturer of these films have given a thought that how much coefficient of friction does the film deliver and why it is even important to set the friction? – Quality, Branding and Maintaining standard. To assure that leading brands must reach to you seeking packaging films for their product you must fulfil the three requirements. Setting a fixed frictional force at which the product does not slide and fall, at the same place it should also not rub the surface to a damage level is an important aspect of flexible packaging industry today.

The coefficient of Friction Tester, Digital Cum Computerised model is designed to determine the static and dynamic friction of a plastic film or sheets. The equipment precisely calculates the exact amount of friction exhibited by the specimen in starting the sliding motion and during the sliding motion when sliding over itself or on another type of substance. The machine design and structure complies with multiple international Test Standards ASTM D 202, ASTM D 4918, ASTM D 1894, ISO 8295, and TAPPI T 815.

The value of Coefficient of friction estimates the stacking ability of a plastic film when transported or in storage. Uneven film thickness often lead to friction which further results in uneven film strength. Using the testing machine, the user can determine the amount of friction load a plastic film can withstand without delivering any damage to the specimen.

In the test, the plastic film layer is first placed wrapping the glass base, over which another small block of glass wrapped by the same sample paper is kept. The small block is tied on top with a thread and hooked on a slider. The Microprocessor based digital controls of the equipment allow to evaluate the tare fore, peak force and save it into the memory. We set the machine at zero tare value and start the test. We stop it when the starting friction is recorded. After that, the specimen slides over the surface until it damages and the user can note the peak value. These values can be saved in the memory and later retrieved. The test specimen is tightly clamped during the test to ensure zero-slippage.

The Digital Cum Computerised model offers a facility for connecting the Coefficient of friction tester with your computer system. The machine comes with a software CD which can be installed in your system easily. The software program is connected to the system and built a one-way connection. The user can see and manage test data on the system but cannot control the machine from the software program. The frictional forces during the test and after a test cycle are observed on a digital display or on your system. Results can be seen in the form of Graphs on the computer. The Graph test report can be taken in Force Vs Time form. Up to 10 Sample test reports can be observed in one generated report. The data can be saved in excel format and Email facility of the report is also given. One can set the Pass/Fail Criteria in the system as per test requirement.
