Solution
- Software-controlled tensile tester.
- Bollard grips matched to rope diameter.
Benefits
- Consistent batch testing with touchscreen control.
- Customizable software for test methods and reporting.
For fishing net manufacturers, Presto presents the high-level tensile testing solutions to assess net & yarn strength and tensile strength of the meshes as per ISO 1805 and ISO 1806. The software-controlled tensile tester provides precise and repeatable measurements of knot strength/force to break the mesh/elongation under controlled load conditions. Specialized bollard grips effectively secure yarn without undue stress being imposed in the test. The touch screen interface enables batch testing, automatic calculation of results, and even customizable reports for quality verification and product development. This test method can assist manufacturers in evaluating the durability of the nets and determining the loss of strength over time during use as well as developing reliable fishing nets that are fit for use in challenging marine conditions.
Requirement
Fishing nets are essential in commercial and aquaculture use, yet failure during operation can cause financial loss and environmental damage through “ghost nets.” Ensuring mechanical strength is therefore critical.
Manufacturers must evaluate yarn and mesh performance under harsh marine conditions, including load variation, temperature, and contamination. Treatments like coatings may improve durability, but must be validated for strength impact.
Users also need to assess in-service nets for strength loss and elongation to determine usability.
ISO 1805 defines testing of yarn breaking and knot strength, while ISO 1806 covers mesh breaking force.
Solution
A tensile tester is used to measure yarn and mesh strength under controlled loading. Mesh samples are prepared with a central cell and tested between pins at fixed spacing.
Bollard grips hold the material securely while minimizing stress concentration. Force is applied at a constant rate until failure, and peak values are recorded across multiple samples.
The system also measures elongation (mm and %) and generates detailed reports. It can be configured for both mesh (ISO 1806) and yarn testing (ISO 1805), providing a complete evaluation solution.
