Constant (controlled) axial loading maximizes contact, and data on torque vs. angle are collected in real-time to monetize peak release torque and to establish pass/fail requirements. Through this testing method, footwear manufacturers will be satisfied that cleats will be easy to remove and install but will not come out from the sole even during physically challenging load conditions and sports activities.
Requirement
A global footwear manufacturer required a method to quantify the release torque of interchangeable cleats used in sports shoes. The cleats, typically designed with six to eight engagement teeth, are mounted into the sole using a standard insert system. Removal is carried out with the help of a tool, which works in designated holes in a cleat.
The goal was to provide a pass/fail criterion, where cleats can be removed with minimal effort and, at the same time, stay firmly attached to their user. This is necessary to avoid loosening under forces applied in the process of being in the ground.
Solution
A computer-controlled torque test system was engineered in a manner that the size of the test footwear was somewhat large enough to allow it enough room throughout rotational testing.
Purpose-made fixtures were designed to improve repeatability and ease of operation. The cleat is accurately aligned using a gimbal mechanism integrated with an X-Y positioning stage. The upper fixture incorporates dual engagement pins to interface with the cleat, while a defined axial load maintains proper engagement during testing.
The applied load is automatically released between test cycles in order to make the tests efficient. The control software will make a real-time capture of the torque versus angle information, determine the peak release torque, and compare it against preset acceptance values to provide an immediate pass/fail indication.
