Spring manufacturers need to obtain the correct force measurement to ensure the performance, durability, and consistency of various types of industrial precision springs. The result of a test needs to be repeatable from small coil springs to heavy industrial struts, and the force capacity needs to be very large.
Presto has software-controlled force testing systems for tension, compression, and load rate testing of springs. The system is performing sensor measurements using high-precision load cells, custom fixtures, and sophisticated software and provides the real-time results of force and displacement measurements while producing real-time graphical reports and instant PASS/FAIL release. It also enables prototype development, batch testing, and production quality control, which will ensure that a manufacturer maintains product consistency and minimizes product rejection rates.

Requirement

Longcroft Engineering designs and produces springs, from tiny clock springs to large flat springs and industrial struts. They work with a range of metals and export around the globe, necessitating high accuracy and uniformity in each product. Once they used scales and calipers, they needed an affordable machine that could accurately test a wide range of spring designs and force ranges.

Solution

Presto Stantest provided Tensile & compression testing systems rated from 2.5 N to 25 kN, enabling measurement of tension, compression, and load rate—the force a spring can withstand under specific deflection. Using ISO 9001-compliant software, tests can be run on individual springs or in batches, with full traceability of operator and sample data.

Custom programs can be created for each spring design, allowing multiple cycles of force application and relaxation. Applied load and displacement are displayed graphically in real time, and pass/fail thresholds are color-coded for immediate feedback. The data is logged for further analysis and reporting. This, in turn, has allowed Longcroft to reduce the incidence of rejected parts without sacrificing production speed.
