ASTM D1424-09(2013) Standard Testing Instruments

ASTM D1424-09 (2013) is a standard test method for tearing strength of fabrics (falling pendulum method). Tearing strength is a stamina presented by a fabric in upping the tear after making a slit. It is widely used by the industries ranging from textiles, apparel, and technical fabrics to packaging and industrial materials to measure the durability, integrity, and uniformity of a fabric's performance when tested under controlled laboratory conditions.

Scope

The test involves dropping a calibrated falling pendulum to determine the amount of energy that is needed to propagate a tear through a fabric specimen under standard test conditions. It is suitable for quality inspection, research work, and production control programs where resistance to tear and performance of fabric materials are important parameters.
