Standard Test Method for Bond Strength of Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials

Significance and Use

This test (ASTM D952) is widely used for determination of the bond and cohesive strength of both laminated and nonlaminated sheet plastics and also of electrical insulating materials under controlled tensile loading conditions. The standard enables electronics, aerospace, automotive, electrical insulation, industrial laminate, and engineering manufacturers to evaluate the quality of internal bonding, the ability to bond layers, and the strength of the structure. It is important for the test, as it would uncover delamination problems, weak bonding zones, and material separation due to processing variation or manufacturing defects. It also supports product development, supplier comparison, incoming material inspection, and production quality studies. Presto Stantest offers advanced Universal Testing Machines suitable for ASTM D952 testing with accurate force measurement, controlled loading speeds, rigid gripping systems, and software-based result analysis for laboratory and industrial testing applications.

Scope

This standard is applicable to the measurement of bond strength (or cohesive strength) of thermoplastic, thermosetting, laminated, and electrically insulating sheet materials. For testing, metal loading equipment is connected to both sides of a specimen, and a tensile force is applied to the normal direction of the specimen until the specimen has ruptured. The test records the maximum force along with the type of failure, including adhesive separation, interlayer bond failure, or material fracture. The method is widely used for studying the mechanical bonding behavior and structural integrity of layered plastic materials under controlled laboratory conditions.

Notes

ASTM D952 is widely followed for evaluating layer adhesion strength and cohesive performance of sheet plastics and electrical insulating materials used in industrial and engineering applications. Presto Stantest provides advanced tensile testing systems suitable for ASTM D952 testing with stable fixtures, precise load control, and software-based reporting solutions for research, quality control, and material evaluation laboratories.
