EN 826

Standard Test Method for Compressive Behavior of Thermal Insulation Materials

Significance and Use

Under controlled loading conditions, EN 826 is a very common method of testing the compressive strength and deformation characteristics of thermal insulation materials. The standard enables manufacturers to analyze the performance characteristics, load-bearing capacity, dimension stability, and compression resistance of insulating material used in buildings—especially roofing, flooring insulation, wall insulation, and foundation systems for EPS, XPS, mineral wool, PIR, and phenolic foam boards. Compression testing can be used to characterize the response of insulating materials when subjected to long-term mechanical loads and distortion, which can impact thermal performance and structural integrity. The standard supports product quality verification, material comparison, design evaluation, and manufacturing consistency studies. Presto Stantest offers advanced compression testing systems suitable for EN 826 testing with accurate force measurement, stable compression platens, and software-based result analysis for laboratory and industrial testing applications.

Scope

This standard lays down a procedure for the measurement of the compression characteristics of thermal insulation products when subjected to uniaxial compression. The specimen subjected to testing will be given compression between rigid parallel platens at a controlled stretch rate until yield is reached or, if a yield point is not measurably reached, until the 10% deformation point is reached. The test measures compressive strength, compressive stress at defined deformation levels, and compression modulus, where applicable. The method applies to different thermal insulation materials used in construction and industrial insulation applications.

Notes

EN 826 is commonly followed for evaluating the compressive performance and deformation characteristics of thermal insulation materials used in building and construction industries. Presto Stantest provides advanced compression testing systems with precise load control, stable fixtures, and software-based reporting solutions suitable for quality control, product development, and research laboratories.
