ISO 4892-3-2012 Standard Testing Instruments

ISO 4892-3 specifies the apparatus requirements, lamp types, exposure cycles, and procedural conditions for exposing plastic specimens to fluorescent UV radiation combined with controlled heat and moisture. It simulates outdoor weathering degradation under reproducible laboratory conditions. Presto Group's UV weathering chambers support UVA and UVB lamp configurations with programmable condensation cycling, fully meeting ISO 4892-3 apparatus requirements for plastic durability testing.

 
Significance
The value of ISO 4892-3 lies in the fact that three different types of lamps are specified in order to simulate the solar radiation under three different conditions: the UVA-340 lamp for simulation under global solar radiation, the UVA-351 lamp for simulation with window-glass-filtered sunlight, and the UVB-313 lamp for accelerated degradation testing (only by agreement). With this differentiation a manufacturer can choose those exposures that are most relevant to the specific end-use environment to produce more meaningful and application-specific weathering resistance data for plastics development and qualification programs.

Scope

The ISO 4892-3 standard is valid for plastic samples exposed to fluorescent UV radiation, heat, and condensation/demineralized water spray according to a program of different exposures. It prescribes apparatus specifications, lamp type, irradiance, temperature control, and the parameters of the wetting cycle. This standard is designed for plastic manufacturers, material developers, and quality laboratories assessing the long-term durability and weathering resistance of plastic materials in automotive applications, in the construction industry, and in industrial applications.
