The following table explains the summary of impact testing by IZOD and Charpy Tester and can help you to choose the one which suits best to your requirement.

55 x 10 x 10mm
The impact testing is done to determine the strength or toughness of a material like metals, and plastics, etc. This test can be done by the two main alternates. One is the IZOD test and the second is Charpy Test. Though both the tests follow the same principle, yet they are performed differently. The present article is all about the difference between the two to help you choose the one that is suitable for your requirement. Here are some points differentiating and explaining the traits of both tests.
The specimen position in both the test methods is different. It is vertical in the IZOD method, whereas horizontal in the case of the Charpy test.
The point of the strike of the hammer in both the test is again different. In the vertical or IZOD method, the hammer strikes on the upper tip of the specimen. On the other hand, in horizontal or Charpy testing, the hammer strikes at the point of the notch but in the opposite direction.
The notch direction for both techniques is different. In the IZOD test, the notch direction faces the striker which is fastened in a pendulum. While, in the Charpy test, the notch direction is positioned away from the striker.
The impact testing is done mainly by two types of notches i.e. U-notch & V-notch. The IZOD testing follows V-notch only, whereas the Charpy test is followed by both U-notch as well as V-notch.
Even testing the same specimen, the dimension for both the test would be different. For the IZOD test, the dimension for the specimen is 75 x 10 x 10mm. On the other hand, the dimension for the specimen for the Charpy test is 55 x 10 x 10.
In both tests, a hammer is used as a striker. In the IZOD test, it is a farming hammer whereas the Charpy test is followed by the Ball Pin hammer.
Presto Stantest is a renowned company that offers hi-tech digital Izod and Charpy impact tester to determine the impact resistance of plastic and metal. The company avails quality testing solution that adhere to the global standards like ASTM D883 – 12, ASTM D256 – 10, ASTM D1204 – 14, ASTM D1248 – 12, ASTM E691 – 14, ASTM D618 – 13 standards.
The energy of impact in ASTM standards is denoted in units of J/m or ft-lb/in. To determine the impact strength units, the impact energy in J (or ft-lb) is divided by the thickness of the specimen. Normally, the test result is the average value obtained from testing 5 specimens. In ISO standards, the impact strength is expressed in units of kJ/m2.
