Packaging

Packaging

Consumer packaging

Most of the modern products are supplied in pre-filled packages, and the packaging should hold the content and, at the same time, be easy to crack open by the final user. This twofold necessity, coupled with the mounting environmental laws, puts a strain on the manufacturers to maximize the use of materials at the expense of performance.

Packaging design is often a trade-off between competing attributes. As an illustration, the puncture resistance should be coupled with the controlled onset of tears, while still ensuring that, the safe closures are easily accessible. In the pharmaceutical field, seals are designed to be as safe as possible in terms of integrity, but be able to allow a predictable peel strength to safely open.

The material thickness in which plastic containers are filled needs to be distributed with caution in order to have the strength to withstand the process of filling, capping, stacking, and storing. Top-load testing is widely used in order to check the ability of bottles to resist compressing forces vertically. Equally, aerosol cans and ring-pull closures are to be tested to meet the acceptable ergonomic actuation force. Packaging is increasingly becoming a design-oriented object, and this offers even more challenges trying to grasp and test such products.

The Presto Stantest designs force and torque testing systems coupled with application-designed fixtures to test the packaging performance in the design validation and production quality control. The software has advanced control and analysis software that allows accurate, repeatable tests and standards-compliant testing with very little human intervention.

Transit packaging

In the case of transit packaging, the goal is to attain the best protection by using the minimum material and reduced weight. At the material level, the tests are important in the determination of overall packaging performance.

Examples of these tests are the edge crush, ring crush, and flat crush, which have been proven as good signs of a strong board and may, in most cases, have an almost similar result to full box compression. These assessments can effectively be done using a universal testing machine. Moreover, adhesive testing, tapes, strapping materials, friction properties, stiffness, tensile strength, and puncture resistance can also be tested on a single integrated system.

Solutions of Presto Stantest help to adhere to international and industry-specific standards, such as ASTM, BS EN, ISO, DIN, CEN, FEFCO, FINAT, and TAPPI, among others, which provide the same quality in both local and export markets.

Tensile Testing Machine Digital

Tensile Testing Machine Digital

A Tensile Testing Machine is a precision laboratory instrument designed to evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, and mechanical properties of materials under controlled testing conditions.
It is highly recommended for evaluating the tensile strength of products and materials. The equipment is based on the Constant Rate of Traverse (CRT) principle. It is equipped with an upper jaw and a lower jaw. Universal
Tensile Testing Machine is a reliable piece of equipment which is widely used for checking tensile strength of a product/sample. One of the most common mechanical testing techniques used to determine tensile strength, this is a method wherein controlled tension is applied to a sample until it fully fails.
Thus, the material properties of the sample can be easily determined by this test. It involves measuring the force required to elongate a sample under test to breaking point. Using this test, manufacturers and quality managers are able to determine the core strength of their products.

Box Compression Tester

Box Compression Tester Digital

Box Compression Tester is a consistent tool to indicate the Compression strength of cardboard boxes so that it does not get deformed or crushed when stacked one above the other during storage or transit. Cardboard boxes are commonly stacked one on top of the other, during warehousing and storage. So, to ensure that they do not collapse during this, it is necessary to measure their box compression strength. It is based on the principle of measuring the maximum load that the material can withstand without breaking. This process is performed by applying a gradually increasing compression force to a sample until it fails using Box Compression Tester.

Using the equipment, a force-deformation curve can be obtained. This curve helps us evaluate the resistance of a package. It is a reliable equipment that provides accurate information regarding the compressive strength and durability of the package. It enables manufacturers to choose a more resistant packaging and to ensure the contents of the package don’t get damaged during stacking or transit.

Thus, corrugated boxes/cartons/paper packaging can be tested using Box Compression tester. It is widely used to determine compressive resistance, deformation and stacking capability of cartons and corrugated boxes.

Crease Stiffness Tester Prima Model

Presto has recently introduced a crease stiffness HMI tester to test the crease resistance and board stiffness of various products like carton board, paper, printing, and packaging materials. The board stiffness and crease recovery are critical in the performance of cartons, especially on high-speed packaging machines and manual folding. The value of crease stiffness is technically important in the folding of carton blanks, most importantly during the release and closure.
Bursting Strength Tester

Burst Genie 4.0 Digital

The force required for bursting or complete rupture of the board is measured through a Digital Indicator. The bursting strength defines the material's quality as compared to the others. Bursting Strength Tester Genie 4.0 provides a hydraulic pressure on the sample. In the Presto Bursting Strength Tester, a hydraulic pressure is applied on the sample under test, using a neoprene diaphragm, on a circular area. So, a circular piece of the sample of the corrugated board is used for the test. Widely used in the paper and packaging industries, this Digital Bursting Strength Tester conforms to major global testing standards including ASTM D3786-01, ASTM D3786-80a, IS 1060 Part-1 1987, ASTM D774, ISO 2758, and ISO 2759. Compliance with these standards makes it a reliable choice for manufacturers who need precise quality control and international acceptance of their test results. Its dual test modes for paper and board, along with automatic calculation of bursting factor and pass/fail criteria, make it one of the most advanced solutions for packaging material testing.
