ISO 6383-1 is a global standard that defines a test method to determine the tear resistance of plastic films and thin sheeting by the trouser tear method. The test involves cutting a slit in a sample and splitting the sample apart, or what can be thought of as the two legs of the trousers, and measuring the amount of force it takes to rip the part open. This technique is especially well suited to the flexible plastics that are employed in packaging, industry, medical, and consumer goods.
