When foodstuffs packed in flexible pouches (inflated with inert gas) are transported or stored, the bulge height of pouches becomes an important parameter to be measured. If there is high variation in fillheight, it affects the proper packaging and possibility of damage to few pouches. Also, inconsistency of fill-height is interpreted as a product quality issue. Air Bulge Tester (or “Air-Fill Tester” as it may be called) is designed to measure fill-height of pouches. The instrument is designed for use in testing laboratories of manufacturing companies in a diverse range of products. The development of the instrument has been based on feedback from eminent stakeholders in the flexible packaging industry.
The instrument consists of a rigid metallic base with two vertical columns that act as a guide for a moving rigid-plastic plate that is transparent. The metallic base plate has been provided with a spirit level. A digital measurement device is attached to the moving plate to measure the gap. Great care has been taken to machine the components with high accuracy to ensure smoothly aligned movement of the upper plate resulting in better measurements. Two pairs of restricting rods are provided to limit the placement of the pouch in the center. The position of the rods can be manually setin a way to restrict the movement of the sample pouch. The position of the rods is fixed by releasing knobs provided on the top of the rods.
Amechanical lockis provided to automatically lock the position of the moving plate on its topmost level. The measurement procedure is simple and fast, and does not require a skilled operator. The instrument can be used for a variety of flexible packagings used in food & beverage, pharmaceutical, medical, oil & lubes, dairy industry, edible oils, etc. Calibration can be easily done by the user. Theinstrument comes with an operating manual, calibration certificate, and a calibration block.
