Pull-Out Testing

For cosmetics manufacturers, the performance and safety of the brushes, wands, and applicators are critical to their durability and reliability. One of the top cosmetic companies producing a wide variety of applicators needed an accurate testing method for testing the tensile strength and pull-out force of brush bristles constructed from a combination of mixed filaments, plastics, and rubber.

Standard vice grips could not effectively keep the unique shapes and geometries of cosmetic brushes, which led to unstable measurements. Presto Stantest has opted to address this challenge through the engineering of a solution that is specific to cosmetic applicator testing.

There were also interchangeable fixtures that could be used for a multitude of brushes and applicators such as eyeliner, blush, and mascara. This versatility allowed manufacturers to test a variety of products at a consistent and reliable quality while keeping high-quality standards.

Presto Stantest is a new method to conduct cosmetic brush pull-out tests for both cosmetic manufacturers in domestic and international businesses to provide a reliable solution in mechanical testing.

Customised Engineering Solution

The stability and sturdiness of the brushes, wands, and applicators in the cosmetics industry are very important to the performance of the product and the safety of consumers. The manufacturer of one of the most popular cosmetic brands, offering a wide variety of brushes and applicators, needed to have accurate mechanical testing equipment as the way to measure the tensile characteristics of the bristles. These bristles often consist of mixed filaments or incorporate plastic or rubber components specifically designed for cosmetic applications.

Traditional testing methods using conventional vise grips were insufficient to securely hold the irregular shapes of brush handles and bristle ends. To address this challenge, Presto Stantest developed a custom engineering solution. Plates were designed with profile-specific holes to capture the bristles uniformly, ensuring proper axial alignment under the loadcell during testing. The brush handle was firmly secured using a lathe-chuck grip, allowing accurate and consistent pull-off measurements for each brush type.

Repeatable and Reliable Testing

Exchangeable fixtures allowed the manufacturer to obtain repeatable results with applicator designs having a wide range of shapes. Within the cosmetics industry, items are extremely design-intensive, and every brush or applicator, be it an eyeliner, mascara, or blush, has a specific geometry that is designed to promote accurate product use. The right measuring tools used in the design of the bristles through accurate mechanical tests are used to make sure that the bristles do not come off in daily usage and to provide secure, reliable, and uniform bristles to the consumers.

The custom solution gives reproducible, actionable data, enabling the brands to streamline the performance of the brushes, their lifespan, and, in general, quality. Presto Stantest provides solutions that support domestic and global cosmetic markets by being able to integrate further. They can also be used by the manufacturers to optimize the brush applications, justify the use of particular material selection, and ensure adolescent quality control to ensure that no applicator changes with each batch.

This test mix of obsessive accuracy and intelligent testing design will allow Presto Stantest to increase the life cycle of products, consumer satisfaction, and the worldwide standards of quality and thus will become a reliable companion in the mechanical testing of the cosmetics and personal care sectors.
