BS EN ISO 22254

BS EN ISO 22254

BS EN ISO 22254 is a test for determining the resistance of the tufted portion of manual toothbrushes and applies to toothbrushes with the conventional flat trim design. Precision force testing instruments offered by Presto enable the manufacturers of toothbrushes and testing laboratories to test accuracy and bristle deflection resistance characterization in accordance with BS EN ISO 22254 with accuracy, consistency, and full traceability.

Significance

The stiffness of bristles is an important quality factor for manual toothbrushes, which affects the cleanliness effectiveness and safety of use. Too hard and it can cause harm to gums and tooth enamel; too soft and it will not be as effective in removing the plaque. The tufted area of a manual toothbrush has been a big concern to users and producers alike, as this specification yields a measure of the deflection resistance of the tufted part that could be used to calculate a unit stiffness value. Standardized deflection testing helps manufacturing companies confirm that their product meets the claims on their label and that there is uniformity in products manufactured.

Scope

The results of using this standard may differ from consumer perception of a particular toothbrush's bristles. Manual interdental brushes and oral hygiene devices powered by machinery are explicitly excluded from this standard because of the fact that there are separate specifications for such devices. The standard addresses sampling, test setup, force application methodology, and result expression, providing a structured framework for comparative evaluation. Presto's instruments deliver the controlled, repeatable loading conditions essential for reliable tufted portion deflection measurements across diverse toothbrush designs.
