SM-PR-2645 is a standard Coca-Cola Company test standard, which defines the method for the test of vertical load resistance (also referred to as top-load strength) of non-refillable (NR) plastic bottles. This standard is particularly used to determine the strength of a column in compressive loading conditions and sets lower thresholds on what the PET bottle can be used for without failing due to the mechanical demands of the industrial filling/capping and warehousing processes. Presto is the jeweled name behind precision packaging testing instrumentation—the top-load testers can support beverage manufacturers or suppliers to undertake such testing with accuracy and repeatability.

Significance

With manufacturers continually seeking to cut packaging materials and costs and, consequently, environmental impacts, thinner-wall bottles are being developed to retain their structural strength, which has become a major engineering challenge. SM-PR-2645 ensures that empty or filled non-refillable bottles resist the counterpressure forces during counterpressure filling or multi-layer warehouse stacking. By meeting this standard, Coca-Cola packaging will act as an assurance that products are intact while reducing costly line stoppages and safeguarding brand reputation for a global standard.

Scope

Coca-Cola SM-PR-2645 is for non-refillable plastic bottles, mostly PET, sold throughout The Coca-Cola Company's bottling system. The standard prescribes two types of loading conditions: top load performance, which the empty bottle must withstand when subjected to forces from against pressure it encounters during the filling process, and compressive load resistance performance, which refers to the filled bottle in a stacking situation in the warehouse. It sets the test parameters such as the specimen preparation, loading speed, compression plate size, and a minimum peak load criterion value to establish a uniform in-house methodology in supplier qualification, production quality control, and packaging design validation.
