ASTM D2063/D2063M

ASTM D2063/D2063M

ASTM D2063/D2063M is an internationally recognized standard that defines test methods for evaluating torque retention in continuous thread closure and container systems. Developed under ASTM Committee F02, it provides a structured, reproducible approach to measuring how well a threaded closure maintains its applied torque over time and under defined environmental conditions. At Presto, our torque testing instruments are fully aligned with this standard, helping packaging manufacturers ensure closure integrity throughout the product lifecycle.

ASTM D2063/D2063M

Significance

Threaded closures are widely used across pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, personal care, and household chemical packaging. A closure that loses torque prematurely can result in leakage, contamination, tamper vulnerability, or product spoilage — all of which carry significant quality and safety consequences. ASTM D2063/D2063M enables packaging engineers and quality teams to quantify torque retention performance using non-automated spring torque meters or torque wrenches, supporting both product development evaluations and production-level quality control under controlled application conditions.

Scope

This standard evaluates the torque retention of continuous thread closures on matching container finishes across predetermined environmental conditions over time. It accommodates both SI and inch-pound unit systems independently, with SI units recommended as the preferred system. The standard applies to container-closure systems of varying designs, materials, and construction and is suitable for packaging development, engineering evaluation, and compliance testing. It does not cover every safety issue, and it places the onus on the user to ensure suitable safety and regulatory procedures have been put in place prior to application.
