Standard Test Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials

Significance and Use

ASTM F88/F88M is a widely followed standard used for measuring the seal strength of flexible packaging materials under controlled peel testing conditions. Seal integrity is one of the most important parameters of food packaging, sterile barriers for medicine, medical pill bottles, and industrial flexible packaging products. A seal may be damaged or unsealed, leading to contamination, leakage, product spoilage, or failure during transportation and storage. The standard helps manufacturers evaluate the force required to separate heat-sealed joints and study sealing consistency during production processes. It also supports quality verification, seal process validation, and packaging performance analysis for different flexible packaging structures. Presto Instruments offers advanced tensile and seal strength testing systems suitable for ASTM F88/F88M testing with precise force measurement and software-based data analysis.

Scope

This standard covers the determination of seal strength between flexible-to-flexible and flexible-to-rigid packaging materials. Testing may be performed on laboratory-prepared specimens or commercially produced packaging samples. The standard defines different specimen holding techniques to minimize bending effects during peel testing and maintain result consistency. During the test, the sealed specimen is separated under controlled tensile force while the testing system records peel force and failure characteristics such as adhesive peel, delamination, or material rupture.

Notes

ASTM F88/F88M is widely used in packaging quality control laboratories for evaluating sealing performance and maintaining product safety in flexible packaging applications.
