BS EN 12209

Introduction

This European standard, known as BS EN 12209, sets the conditions and methods for testing as well as the requirements of durability, strength, security, and function of mechanically operated locks and latches and their locking plates for building doors, window doors, and entrance doors. It is a widely recognized benchmark in the building hardware industry, adopted across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors to ensure lock products meet defined performance thresholds. Presto's precision testing systems support manufacturers in conducting compliance evaluations as per BS EN 12209 requirements under controlled laboratory conditions.

Significance

BS EN 12209 sets clear testing standards and classification systems for key indicators such as category of use, durability, security, fire resistance, and smoke prevention, ensuring that products meet stringent requirements in various applications. BS EN 12209 classifies mechanically actuated locks, latches, and locking plates using an 11-digit coding system, providing an appropriate assessment of all the various characteristics of products for specific markets. This enables manufacturers to demonstrate product quality consistently and facilitates CE marking compliance.

Scope

This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for durability, strength, security, and functionality of mechanically operated locks and their locking plates for use on fire and smoke compartmentation doors fitted with door-closing devices to enable such doors to close reliably and thus achieve self-closing in the event of fire and for use on locked fire doors to maintain the fire integrity of the door assembly. Products not covered include cylinders for locks, handles, electromechanical locks, multi-point locks, window locks, padlocks, furniture locks, and prison locks.
