BS EN 12311-2

BS EN 12311-2

BS EN 12311-2 is a European standard that defines the test methods for measuring tensile properties of plastic and rubber sheets for roof waterproofing applications. It's been revised over the years; this latest version replaces the previous ones. Presto's top-end precision testing equipment is engineered to satisfy the stringent needs of BS EN 12311-2 and provides manufacturers and quality tests with the ability to accurately assess the tensile strength of a waterproofing membrane prior to installation in a construction project.

Significance

Typically known as tensile properties, these measures will help to determine how waterproof membranes will hold up to the mechanical stresses on them that can occur throughout their service life and during the installation process. Inadequate tensile strength and/or elongation capacity of a membrane can cause cracks, tears, or membrane failures due to thermal movement and loading of the structure and can result in failure of the building envelope. BS EN 12311-2 establishes testing criteria that demonstrate plastic and rubber sheets achieve certain performance levels, providing specifiers and contractors with information to ensure they choose fit-for-purpose materials and provide durable roofing solutions. Presto's testing solutions provide accurate, consistent results that support confident material qualification.

Scope

The standard specifies two methods: Method A, based on EN ISO 1421, is the preferred approach for all materials; Method B, based on ISO 37, is applied when Method A is unsuitable because the material does not rupture. This standard is designed for characterizing plastic and rubber sheets as manufactured or supplied prior to use and relates to products or their components rather than to installed waterproofing membrane systems. Presto Stantest's instruments support both methods for complete compliance.
