BS EN 1608

BS EN 1608

BS EN 1608 is the European standard that establishes the equipment and method for the determination of the tensile strength of a thermal insulating product parallel to its faces for use in building products. It complements BS EN 1607 (which is focused on perpendicular tensile strength) and will assess in-plane tensile resistance to give a holistic view of mechanical properties. Presto's precision tensile testing instruments are designed to satisfy BS EN 1608 requirements, allowing manufacturers and testing laboratories to make accurate and repeatable parallel tensile strength measurements easily.

Significance

One key material property that is relevant when considering the resistance of thermal insulation products to in-plane loading includes tensile strength, as in-plane tension is applied when the products are handled, cut, installed, and loaded while in service. It can be used to establish if the product is not too weak to withstand stresses introduced when in transit or in use and can thus assist in pre-qualification or quality control. Parallel tensile capabilities minimize the risk of tears or splits in the insulating components during the normal building process and provide integrity of materials and building performance.

Scope

A specimen is gripped between two clamps at a tensile testing machine and stretched at a predetermined rate during the test; the largest tensile force is measured, and then the tensile strength is calculated. The standard includes detailed information on the test process, apparatus, test specimens, test procedure, calculation and expression of test results, accuracy of measurement, and test reporting. While primarily applicable to thermal insulating products for building use, it may also be applied in other relevant areas. Presto Stantest's instruments ensure full compliance across the standard's scope.
