BS EN 17394-2

 BS EN 17394-2

A European standard that sets a standardized test method for assessing children's clothing and how well buttons are secured to it is BS EN 17394-2. Launched in October 2020, it includes sewn-on buttons, toggle buttons, and tack buttons on garments, such as gloves, hats, scarves, hosiery, and textile belts. At Presto, we offer testing solutions fully aligned with this standard to support manufacturers in delivering safer children’s wear.

Significance

Buttons can be a real choking hazard for quickly spoken words, especially when detached. This standard is important in that it establishes a confidence-building methodology that helps decrease the risk by establishing a standardized test procedure that can be repeated to test button attachment strength. Compliance reflects product responsibility, increases consumer confidence, and exists to facilitate the achievement of conformity with European regulatory systems on children's product safety.

Scope

This standard covers buttons for functional and decorative purposes on children's apparel, but not buttons for children's toys, footwear, child care items (excluding apparel), and accessories sold independently of apparel. It focuses specifically on sewn-on, toggle, and tack button types. The performance requirements have been published in the CEN/TS 17394-1, with other fastener types being the subject of the CEN/TS 17394-3 and the CEN/TS 17394-4.
