Standard Peel Testing Method Used for Measuring the 90-degree Peel Resistance
Significance and Use
The 90-degree peel resistance of adhesive bonds in which only one pair of components is flexible, and the other pair is rigid, in controlled laboratory conditions, is determined in accordance with BS EN 28510-1. The standard provides guidelines for manufacturers to build a matrix of data for the adhesive bonding performance, peel strength, and failure characteristics for materials in automotive, packaging, footwear, electronics, medical devices, laminates, and industrial assembly applications. The 90° peel is helpful for materials that do not withstand the 180° peel without cracking or structural damage. The test supports adhesive quality verification, material comparison, supplier evaluation, and product development activities. Presto Stantest offers advanced peel and tensile testing systems suitable for BS EN 28510-1 testing with precise force measurement, controlled loading speeds, and software-based result analysis.
Scope
This standard specifies a 90-degree peel test method for bonded assemblies where one substrate is flexible, and the other is rigid. During testing, the flexible adherend is peeled from the rigid surface at a constant speed while the testing machine records peel force continuously. The method evaluates average peel resistance, peak peel force, and adhesive failure characteristics under controlled testing conditions. The standard also defines specimen preparation, testing speed, adhesive dimensions, conditioning requirements, and peel angle maintenance for accurate and repeatable results.
Notes
BS EN 28510-1 is widely used for studying peel resistance and adhesive bonding performance of flexible-to-rigid material assemblies used in industrial and commercial applications. Presto Stantest provides advanced peel testing systems with stable gripping arrangements, controlled peel testing conditions, and software-based reporting solutions suitable for laboratory and production quality control environments.
