BS EN 5057

BS EN 5057

BS ISO 5057:2022 is an internationally recognized standard that establishes structured methods for the inspection and repair of solid-section fork arms fitted to all types of forklift trucks. Published in August 2022 as the second edition, it replaces BS ISO 5057:1993 with technically revised requirements, expanded inspection criteria, and testing requirements now aligned with ISO 2330. At Presto, our material testing instruments support maintenance teams and quality laboratories in conducting reliable, standards-compliant forklift arm evaluations to uphold workplace safety.

Significance

Fork arms are one of the most mechanically strained parts in material handling applications. Load failures or breakaway incidents can be catastrophic and extremely dangerous for the operator and surrounding infrastructure if cracks in their surface are not detected or if there is excessive wear, deformation, or hook damage. Incorporating a competency-based inspection framework, BS ISO 5057:2022 will help organizations proactively identify deteriorating fork arms and indicate the need to remove them from service and repair before putting them back in service to reduce workplace incidents and liability.

Scope

This standard applies to solid-section fork arms in active service across all forklift truck types. It covers inspection intervals — not exceeding 12 months under standard conditions, and as frequently as every 4 months in arduous environments such as mining, marine, or corrosive chemical operations. These parameters are determined by crack checking at the tip surface, checking for wear on the blades and shanks (withdrawal is set at 90% of blade thickness), deviation from straightness, legibility of the marking and the locking of the position. Repairs shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's advice – no welding to repair cracks or worn areas and repaired arms shall be subjected to the ISO 2330 yield test before being put back in service.
