CETIE Guide 12

CETIE Guide 12

CETIE Guide No. 12 is a voluntary best practice document published by the International Technical Centre for Bottling and Related Packaging (CETIE), dedicated to the correct crimping of pumps with aluminum ferrules onto FEA-type glass finishes used in the perfumery and cosmetics industry. First published in 2004 and updated in January 2020, this guide outlines five essential rules that manufacturers and bottlers must observe to achieve secure, market-compliant crimped closures. At Presto, our crimping and closure testing instruments support manufacturers in validating their crimping processes in line with CETIE recommendations.

Significance

In luxury packaging for perfumery and personal care applications, crimping quality is important, as poor ferrule application can result in pump separation, leaks, and contamination of the product, which ultimately affects brand value and consumer safety. CETIE Guide No. 12 provides a clear, industry-aligned framework for achieving consistent crimp integrity across production batches. By adhering to its recommendations, manufacturers can minimize waste, reduce defect levels, and deliver the standards required by international cosmetics and perfumery brands with regard to performance.

Scope

This guide applies specifically to the crimping of pumps using aluminum ferrules onto FEA-type glass neck finishes for perfumery, as defined under EN 14854 and CETIE document GME 40.05. It covers crimping performed using a crimping tool and addresses the dimensional and process requirements necessary to fulfill current market demands. Importantly, this guide does not extend to crimping carried out using rotating heads or rolling methods, nor does it cover other finish types or non-aluminium ferrule materials.
