IS 3400 (PART 1-1987)

IS 3400 Part 1 is the Indian Standard, which is a test method for tensile stress-strain properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers, the same test method as ISO 37 is in accordance with. Some of the most important properties include dumbbell-ring tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at set elongations, and dumbbell/ring tensile stress at yield. Presto Group products provide the testing accuracy required by IS 3400 Part 1 by incorporating rubber specimen grips and extensometers with their tensile testing machines.

IS 3400 (PART 1-1987)

Significance

The importance of IS 3400 Part 1 lies in the fact that the tensile stress-strain properties of rubber materials are some of the basic characteristics that reflect their performance and reliability in service. By measuring the tensile strength, elongation at break, and yield stress, manufacturers can verify compound formulations, maintain uniformity of product manufacture, and verify suitability of the material for other challenging applications, such as automotive seals, industrial gaskets, footwear, and molded rubber products in a range of service conditions.

Scope

IS 3400 Part 1 is applicable to vulcanized and thermoplastic rubber materials, the testing of which is accomplished with dumbbell- or ring-shaped specimens in a test conducted at a constant rate of traverse. It governs specimen preparation, crosshead speed control, force measurement accuracy, and property calculation procedures. The standard supports Indian rubber manufacturers, quality laboratories, and component suppliers requiring standardized tensile evaluation aligned with international ISO 37 testing requirements.

Tensile Testing Machine Digital

Tensile Testing Machine Digital

A Tensile Testing Machine is a precision laboratory instrument designed to evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, and mechanical properties of materials under controlled testing conditions.
It is highly recommended for evaluating the tensile strength of products and materials. The equipment is based on the Constant Rate of Traverse (CRT) principle. It is equipped with an upper jaw and a lower jaw. Universal
Tensile Testing Machine is a reliable piece of equipment which is widely used for checking tensile strength of a product/sample. One of the most common mechanical testing techniques used to determine tensile strength, this is a method wherein controlled tension is applied to a sample until it fully fails.
Thus, the material properties of the sample can be easily determined by this test. It involves measuring the force required to elongate a sample under test to breaking point. Using this test, manufacturers and quality managers are able to determine the core strength of their products.

Presto Stantest Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is a load-testing instrument that pulls or pushes a sample to measure its strength. The word "universal" is there for a reason — the same machine handles tension, compression, bending, peeling and shear, depending on the grip and fixture you fit to it.

Most people use it for tensile tests, where a specimen is gripped at both ends and slowly pulled apart. The force needed to break the sample tells you its strength, and the amount it stretches before breaking tells you about its flexibility. That is why the equipment is also known as a Universal Tensile Tester or a Universal tensile strength tester — the tensile test is its most common job.

In short, if you want one honest answer to "how strong is this material?", a tensile testing machine of this kind is the tool that gives it.

Tensile testing is an important process for evaluating the strength, ductility, and toughness of materials. By determining a material's Young's modulus, tensile testing can also provide information about a material's stiffness.
