ISO 20126

ISO 20126

ISO 20126 is an international standard that lays down the general requirements and test methods that evaluate the physical properties of manual toothbrushes. It was first published and later revised (in its second edition, 2012) by ISO Technical Committee TC 106 to ensure that products known as toothbrushes for dental plaque removal and oral hygiene are structurally sound and safe. We offer precision-testing instruments completely in accordance with ISO 20126 standards at Presto.

Significance

The toothbrush (manual) has to resist repeated mechanical stresses without losing any of its structure. ISO 20126 covers four areas of key performance—tuft retention, fatigue resistance, chemical durability, and handle impact strength—offering a methodical approach for manufacturers to be able to check the safety of the products. Compliance helps brands to meet regulatory expectations, reduce the risk of product failure, and show consumers they are confident in the oral care product they are using, wherever they are in the world.

Scope

The Standard is only applicable to manual toothbrushes used for cleaning oral surfaces. It defines tests including tuft-removal force (minimum 15 N), 75,000-cycle fatigue resistance, chemical challenge exposure, and handle impact evaluation. Specifically excludes manual interdental brushes and powered oral hygiene devices, which have separate international standards.
