ISO 8094

ISO 8094

ISO 8094 is an international standard that is developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 41, Subcommittee SC 3 Conveyor Belts, and that specifies a standardized test method for the adhesion strength of the rubber cover layer to the steel cord in conveyor belts. This is a second edition replacing ISO 8094 and contains revised test procedures that were developed after the improved conveyor belt technology. The standard was also adopted by CEN/TC 188 as EN ISO 8094, which is recognized throughout European and global markets. Presto is a reliable brand of precision testing instruments that offers equipment that is well-suited to meeting the testing requirements of this standard to perform adhesion and bond strength.

ISO 8094

 Significance

In mining, cement, steelmaking, and bulk material handling industries, steel cord conveyor belts are exposed to high mechanical tension, high load, and high run-in. The integrity of the bond between the rubber layer (cover) and the steel cord base (core layer) is directly related to the durability of the belt, its reliability of operation, and maintenance periods. Adhesion strength testing in accordance with ISO 8094 aids manufacturers to detect potential adhesion failure problems early, to verify the manufacturing quality, and to provide belts that will perform with safety under extreme service situations, thereby minimizing unplanned belt downtime and safety hazards.

Scope

ISO 8094 is only applicable to steel cord conveyor belts and describes the principle of the tests, as well as the necessary apparatus, preparation of specimens, test procedure, and methodology of reporting the results. The test indicates how much force is necessary to peel or strip the rubber covering off the layer of steel cord, thus being an indicator of the strength of adhesion between the two essential elements of an article of manufacture. The results are reported as force per unit width, giving an independent and uniform method of quality assurance, batch acceptance testing, and comparison between belts from different belt constructions and rubber compounds.
