ISO 9856

ISO 9856

Conveyor belt elastic and permanent elongation and elastic modulus calculation according to ISO 9856 is the international standard developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 41, Subcommittee SC 3 (Conveyor Belts), which provides a standardized method for determining both elastic and permanent elongation of conveyor belts and also calculating the elastic modulus of conveyor belts. This third edition updates ISO 9856 and has been adopted by CEN/TC 188 as EN ISO 9856. The standard is needed to get an insight into how a conveyor belt deforms during cyclic tensile loading during actual use. As a major precision testing instrument manufacturer, Presto helps leadership manufacturers of conveyor belts and Q-Labs to perform precise elongation tests as per this standard.

ISO 9856

Significance

Conveyor belts will be used in industries including cement, bulk material handling, mining, and logistics under constant dynamic stress loading conditions. Knowing the elastic elongation (recoverable stretch) and permanent elongation (irrecoverable dimensional change) of a belt is essential in designing an efficient conveyor system, setting take-up allowances, and predicting belt behavior during initial installation and long-term operation. A higher elastic modulus indicates lower belt stretch, which directly affects system tension, drive efficiency, and overall operational reliability.

Scope

ISO 9856 applies to conveyor belts of all construction types, including textile and steel cord variants, and specifies that belt specimens be subjected to sinusoidal cyclic stress ranging between 2% and 10% of the belt's nominal breaking strength over 200 loading cycles. The specification includes requirements for apparatus, dimensions of specimens, procedure of test, and method of calculating results with respect to both elastic modulus and permanent elongation values. It explicitly excludes light conveyor belts as defined under ISO 21183-1, for which separate test methods apply.
