TAPPI T 811

TAPPI T 811

There are several acceptable test methods for measuring the edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard, with TAPPI T811 being one of the most popular. This is typically referred to as the Edge Crush Test (ECT), which measures how much crushing pressure can be applied to the side of a sample of corrugated board before it breaks. As an important parameter of the structural strength of the corrugated packaging materials, the test has been extensively used in the packaging industry and paper industry. The high-intensity corrugated boards can not only make the box very stable when stacking, storing, and transporting but also protect it. Presto Stantest advanced ECT testing solutions can help manufacturers conduct a full assessment of the performance of corrugated board as specified in TAPPI T811.

Significance

The edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard directly affects the corrugated boxes' stacking strength and durability. ECV packing materials will tend to bow or collapse under stress, causing damage to products and higher costs for distribution. TAPPI T811 may be helpful in evaluating the quality and consistency of corrugated board materials to guarantee that it meets packaging needs. As a result of test results, help can be offered for the packaging design, quality control, and the development of packaging material. The other advantage is that there is less risk for packaging to fail/perish since the industries provide regular crush testing of the edges.

Scope

TAPPI T811 is a method for measuring edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard in a controlled laboratory. The method includes how to prepare the specimens, the conditioning, and the compression testing that would lead to repeatable results. Applies to all grades/constructions of corrugated board of shipping containers and transport packaging. When using the system, one has a common platform to compare material strength and packaging performance.
