Common issues Occur During Izod Charpy Test With Solutions

The impact tests are designed to measure the resistance to the failure of materials when sudden force will be applied to the specimen. This force may be related to the collision, falling object, or instantaneous blow that may rupture the product. Thus, testing the impact resistance of the objects like plastics is of utmost necessity to determine their durability and strength. By conducting a charpy and izod test you can easily measure the strength of plastics. The Presto Izod and Charpy tester are some of the most effective testing instruments that have been specially designed to evaluate the impact resistance of plastics.

This testing equipment will work on the pendulum method and covers two tests including:

  • Izod(Vertical impact on vertically clamped specimen)
  • Charpy (Horizontal impact on the horizontally placed specimen).

This lab testing instrument will be helpful in determining different properties of materials including ductility, fracture characteristics, brittleness, etc. So, you can easily make use of this amazing lab testing instrument to test the material strength. Here in this blog, we are going to provide you with information about some common problems faced by people while conducting Izod and Charpy tests. We will also discuss its solutions. So, let us get started.

What is the Izod/Charpy test and for what purpose it will be used?

The impact resistance of materials is defined as the ability of the material to withstand an intense force over a short period of time. The Charpy and Izod impact testing techniques will help you to evaluate the toughness of materials.

The Izod/Charpy test will be helpful in comparing the impact resistance of materials and helps to evaluate the relative toughness or impact toughness of products. This amazing testing equipment can be used for various quality control applications to perform the relative impact strength of materials. A material's toughness is a factor in its ability to absorb energy during plastic deformation. This sophisticated pendulum is controlled by a microprocessor that controls all the functions and the test protocols according to major international standards. The Digital impact tester and all its components have been designed and fitted to assure its reliability and long life. The correct operation of the electric and electronic components present in this testing instrument will depend on the proper use and regular maintenance of components. Thus, with the use of Presto Izod and Charpy tester, you can deliver quality products to your customers.

Whenever you conduct the test using Izod and Charpy tester, then you need to install it first in order to conduct the test accurately. For this, you can easily view how to install an Izod Charpy tester and measure the toughness of plastics.

Problems faced by quality heads during Izod/Charpy test

While conducting the test, with izod and charpy tester then there are some common problems faced by many of the quality heads. We have listed them below along with the ways to troubleshoot them.

  • Problem: OL Error on the display

Possible Cause: Hammer is not Set on accurate Scale Mode.

Solution:

I. Press Cal.

II. User will get 0000 on upper display and range of selected scale on Lower Display. Press PAR and then up and down arrow keys to select the required scale.

III. Select the scale according to the strength of the sample to perform the test appropriately

  • Problem: On Pressing the Manual Release Push Button, Electromagnetic Pin not working.

Possible Cause: The spring of the Electromagnetic pin is loose.

Solution: Adjust the spring of the Electromagnetic pin from the backside.

  • Problem: Incorrect Reading on Display.

Possible Cause: Appropriate scale as per the sample strength is not selected

Solution: Select the Appropriate scale i.e. r1, r2, r3, r4 as per the sample strength.

These are the top three problems that will be faced by quality heads.  You can also get information about Aerospace Testing Instruments. You can give us a call at +91 9210903903 or email us at info@prestogroup.com for your queries.
