How is the peel strength of PSA tapes measured?

26-4-2022
The PSA or pressure-sensitive tapes is one of the crucial materials used in the packaging industry that will not require any activation of heat, solvent, or water and is firmly adhered to the majority of similar materials. This easy-to-use adhesive material will form quick bond formation and is lightweight as compared to other mechanical fasteners. Whenever you make use of these tapes, then you need to check their adhesive strength. This can be done with the help of a Presto peel strength tester. This lab testing equipment is useful in quantifying the permanence of adhesion or peel ability of pressure-sensitive materials. Here in this blog, we are going to discuss how you can easily measure the peel strength of PSA tapes. But before that, we will discuss more on Presto peel adhesion bond tester and how it serves to be useful in the packaging industry. So, let us get started!
How peel strength tester is helpful to enhance your packaging?

Steps to measure the peel strength of adhesives
- Start this testing machine by plugging it into a 5 amp, 220 Volts AC. When the machine will be turned ON then you can place the specimen accurately on the upper fixed grips and tighten the grip firmly.
- Now, you can bring the lower movable grip upwards so that the specimen can easily reach the grips.
- You must ensure that the lower limit switch ring should be placed in a position that will keep a minimum distance of 25 mm.
- Now place the lower end of the specimen between the lower grips and tighten the grip firmly.
- Make sure that the specimen is placed in the center of the grips.
- Now press RESET and TARE to set the value at the peak load indicator to zero.
- After setting the zero on the load indicator, turn the rotary switch to the down direction.
- This will move the lower grip in a lower direction. On the movement of the lower grip in the lower direction, there will be an increase in the values shown on the load indicator.
- Now turn the rotary switch to the off position after the specimen has been peeled off. Once the machine stops, the display showing load will return to zero and the green display will freeze.
- Press the Memory switch on the load indicator to show the peak value. Note down the values displayed on the load indicator.
