A moisture meter is a diagnostic instrument used to determine the water content in various materials. It’s commonly used for building materials like wood, drywall, or concrete, as well as bulk materials such as paper, grain, or cardboard.

The Three Main Types of Moisture Meters

Moisture meters are generally in three categories, each serving a unique function:

Pin-Type / Resistance Meters: The meter has a configuration of two distinctive sharp pins inserted into the material. They are commonly used for wood since they give readings deep inside the material.

Pin less (Non-Invasive Meters): Pin less meter’s function by setting the unit against the surface of the material. They utilize electromagnetic radio frequencies to read a greater surface area and shallow depth (typically 3/4" to 1"). They are ideal for quickly covering large spaces such as walls and floors without damage. A digital moisture meter will often have both pin and pin less modes for ultimate convenience.

All-in-One (Combination Meters): The most convenient choice, having both pin and pin less features in one unit. These have the advantages of fast scanning and accurate subsurface readings when required.

Moisture measurement tools can benefit anyone who works with materials that are sensitive to moisture. If users of meters are contractors/ builders for example, it's important for them to understand if materials such as wood and concrete have dried adequately prior to proceeding with finishes or flooring. If not, the wood can warp, crack, and/or not adhere properly as it should.

How Do Moisture Meters Work?

Pin-Type (Resistance)Principle: Water is conductive. Wood, concrete, and drywall typically make poor conductors when they are dry. If the material is damp, the current passes freely (low resistance). If dry, the current is prevented from passing (high resistance).

Reading: Inside the meter, the circuitry converts the amount of resistance measured into a percentage of moisture content utilizing computations pre-set for the selected material type.

Pin-Less (Capacitance/RF) Principle: The level of moisture in the materials affects electric capacitance and the electromagnetic field of the meter at the high frequency. Process: When the sensor pad on the meter is placed on the surface, it sends a low frequency signal through the material. The water molecules in the material disrupt the signal.

Reading: The level of disruption is measured by the meter and converted into a non-invasive moisture content percentage, offering a rapid, non-destructive preliminary reading.
