ASTM C133-97

ASTM C133-97

Cold crushing strength (CCS) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of refractory materials as defined by ASTM C133 test methods from ASTM International. This standard applies to all types of dried, fired, refractory shapes and defines two methods for mechanical evaluation at room temperature: compressive strength test and flexural strength (three-point bending) test. ASTM C133, developed under Subcommittee C08.01, is a valuable reference standard for refractory manufacturers, refractory material researchers, and refractory materials quality control laboratories. Presto's precision testing instruments are designed to support accurate and repeatable evaluation of refractory materials in line with this standard.

ASTM C133-97

Significance

The cold strength of a refractory product is an indication of its structural condition when it is installed and used by man in an industrial application at high temperature, such as a furnace, a kiln, or a reactor. Although CCS and MOR values are not directly indicative of performance at elevated temperatures, they are important properties to assess the consistency of material, manufacturing quality, and suitability for construction. Cold strength data is reliable and supports various industry applications: for procurement, process control, and design of engineering applications in the steel, cement, glass, and petrochemical industries.

Scope

ASTM C133 provides test methods for measuring cold crushing strength and modulus of rupture of all kinds of refractory shapes. The standard outlines the size of specimens, means of preparation (as-formed, sawed, or ground), and how the load is applied (which is different depending on the type of specimen), as well as the rate at which the load is applied, which can greatly affect results. Results must be compared carefully only when all testing parameters are consistent. The standard finds application in research and development, manufacturing process control, and formulation of purchasing specifications for refractory products.
