ASTM D7084-04

 ASTM D7084-04

Standard Test Method for Determining the Bulk Crush Strength of a Catalyst.

Significance and Use

This test method determines the crushing strength of a catalyst in a bed configuration. Unlike individual particle crush tests, this method evaluates how catalyst material performs under realistic reactor or bed conditions. For granular catalysts, this may be the only viable technique for obtaining meaningful crush strength data. Preventing the production of fines in a reactor is critical, as fines lead to bed compaction and undesirable pressure buildup.

Scope

This test method covers the determination of bulk crush strength of formed catalyst particles ranging from 1/32 to 3/16 inch (0.8 to 4.8 mm) in diameter. It is designed to assess the ability of catalyst material to maintain its physical integrity under applied compressive loads representative of bed conditions.

Values are stated in inch-pound units as the primary standard, with SI equivalents provided for reference only. This standard does not address all safety concerns associated with its use. Users are responsible for establishing appropriate safety and health practices and determining the applicability of regulatory limitations before use.

Notes

This standard is developed under ASTM Committee D32 on Catalysts. Presto offers advanced compression testing systems suitable for bulk crush strength testing of catalyst materials with precise force application, controlled loading conditions, and software-based result analysis for laboratory and industrial testing applications.
