BS EN 13942

BS EN 13942

BS EN 13942 is a British Standard that, in line with the European and International Standards, deals with the design, manufacture, testing, and documentation of pipeline valves used in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It specifically covers ball, check, and plug valves of pipelines conforming to ISO 13623. This British Standards Institution (BSI) published standard is a key one in fulfilling the rigorous engineering and safety demands for critical flow-control components. Presto, a leading precision testing and quality control instrument manufacturer, offers reliable solutions to assist valve testing and compliance as per this standard.

Significance

Pipeline valves are important safety devices in the system of oil and gas pipelines. These valves are designed and manufactured referencing the specifications outlined in BS EN 13942 to be able to withstand high force and mechanical stress without damage while also being able to withstand demanding operational pressures. The standard requires maximum handwheel or lever force to obtain breakaway torque to be not more than 360 N, which guarantees the safety of the working personnel. By following this standard, pipeline companies will reduce the risk of valve failure, leakage, and catastrophic pipeline incidents.

Scope

BS EN 13942 focuses on ball, check, gate, and plug valves within onshore petroleum and natural gas pipelines, which are limited to PN 420 (Class 2500) pressure. The standard specifies expectations for design, material selection, manufacturing tolerances, pressure testing, torque and thrust measurement, and documentation. It excludes subsea pipeline valves — which fall under ISO 14723 — and on-land gas supply systems. All measured torque and thrust values must be recorded and must not exceed the manufacturer's documented breakaway specifications.
