BS EN 71-1

BS EN 71-1

BS EN 71-1 is the EU Safety Standard for toys that sets out the mechanical and physical requirements of a toy designed for use by children. The standard forms part of the EN 71 series, and they are directed at identifying and minimizing risks that can reasonably be anticipated to arise in the normal or reasonably foreseeable misuse of toys. Prescribes testing requirements for such things as sharp edges, small parts, moving parts, cords, springs, and structural strength. BS EN 71-1 is intended to assist toy manufacturers in developing toys that are safe for play across each age band and which reduce the risk of injury.

Significance

In a nutshell, BS EN 71-1 is of critical value to the toy industry as a benchmark for ensuring child safety and regulatory compliance. Children are prone to interacting with toys in random ways, and products need to be able to generate resistances to a variety of physical abuse (without becoming hazards). The standard aids manufacturers in determining the durability and mechanical integrity of toys prior to their release in the marketplace. Potential hazards, including sharp projections, entrapment points, choking hazards, or structural failure, can be identified through the testing to BS EN 71-1. Manufacturers can use this standard to improve product quality and consumer confidence and to prove their dedication to making toys safe for kids.
