ISO 14273

ISO 14273

BS ISO 14273 is an internationally recognized standard that defines specimen dimensions and a structured testing procedure for tensile shear testing of resistance spot welds and embossed projection welds in overlapping metallic sheets. Published as the second edition in March 2016, it replaces and technically revises BS ISO 14273, with updates aligned to ISO 17677-1. At Presto, our tensile testing machines are designed to support laboratories in conducting precise, repeatable weld strength evaluations fully compliant with this standard's requirements.

Significance

The resistance spot and projection welding processes are the basic welding processes used in automotive, aerospace, structural, and sheet metal manufacturing. Tensile shear strength of the weld joint is a critical quality indicator that affects the structural integrity, load-bearing capacity, and safety of the product. BS ISO 14273 provides a standardized, repeatable, and destructive test method to allow manufacturers and quality engineers to objectively define the weld performance, to compare between production batches, to validate welding parameters, and to deliver documented and traceable test results to satisfy customers' and regulators' quality requirements.

Scope

This standard covers tensile shear testing of spot and embossed projection welds in overlapping sheets of any metallic material with thickness ranging from 0.5 mm to 10 mm, where the weld diameter does not exceed 7√t (t = sheet thickness in mm). It specifies precise specimen dimensions based on sheet thickness, overlap length, specimen width, and free clamping length—with defined configurations for both single and multiple weld test specimens. Testing must be conducted at room temperature using a tensile testing machine meeting ISO 7500-1 requirements. The maximum tensile shear force sustained by the specimen constitutes the reported tensile shear strength value.
