ISO 505
Standard test method used for measuring the resistance of textile conveyor belts Significance and Use It is the ISO 505:2017 standard, which is commonly employed for measuring the tear propagation resistance of textile conveyor belts when they are subjected to controlled tensile loading conditions. The standard is used to aid in the study of the resistance to cuts or tears that may occur under service conditions from sharp material, impact loading, and operational damage faced by a conveyor belt by the manufacturer. It is widely observed in all kinds of bulk material handling systems, like the mining system, cement industry, steel industry, port, etc., where the conveyor is subjected to heavy-duty service. The tear resistance test is relevant in the field of product quality verification, studying the life of materials, comparing different materials, or assessing the safety of conveyors. Low tearability causes fast belt wear-out, production downtime, and expensive maintenance problems. Presto Stantest offers advanced tensile testing systems suitable for ISO 505 testing with precise force measurement, controlled jaw separation speed, stable gripping arrangements, and software-based result analysis for laboratory and industrial quality testing applications.

Scope
This standard specifies a tensile test method for determining the force required to propagate an existing tear in textile conveyor belts. Testing may be performed on complete belt constructions or on carcass-only specimens after removal of cover layers. Prepared specimens with a predefined longitudinal cut are mounted in the testing machine and pulled under controlled conditions until tear propagation occurs. Continuous force values are recorded throughout the test to calculate tear resistance performance. The method helps study belt durability, resistance to tearing, and structural performance under tensile stress conditions. Notes ISO 505:2017 is commonly followed for evaluating the tear propagation resistance of textile conveyor belts used in heavy industrial conveying systems. Presto Stantest provides advanced tensile testing systems suitable for conveyor belt tear testing with accurate load measurement, controlled testing speed, stable grips, and software-based reporting solutions for research and quality control laboratories.
