 ASTM D6175-03

ASTM D6175-03 (2019) is a standardized test method established to determine the radial crush strength of extruded catalyst and catalyst carrier particles. This test method is designed to evaluate an extruded catalyst's capacity to maintain physical integrity while in operation. It's relied upon in diverse applications throughout the petrochemical, refining, and chemical processing sectors, wherever the mechanical durability of catalysts plays critical roles in reactor efficiency and operation. Presto precision compression testing systems can be used to perform ASTM D6175 compression testing under laboratory-controlled conditions.

Significance

They make materials that are widely used in fixed-bed reactors, where mechanical strength is required during handling, loading, and operation in order to prevent the material from breaking or producing fines. The geometry of the sample and flask cup is consistent with every sample, allowing manufacturers to easily measure radial crush strength to growing test lots and anticipate which lots have weak geometry, avoid particle degradation, minimize pressure drop issues in reactors, and ensure homogeneous catalyst performance over the length of the catalyst's useful life. The standard is a reliable measure for quality control, material comparison, and production validation of all worldwide catalyst-making processes.

Scope

This test method is used to determine the radial crush strength of cylindrical extruded catalyst and extruded catalyst carrier particles to evaluate mechanical integrity and resistance to handling and operational stress by measuring the crush strength of individual extrudates and catalysts/catalyst carriers. It is a valuable aid in the inspection, research, and production control of petrochemical, refining, and other catalyst manufacturing industries in which strength is a crucial factor of the particle characteristics.
